I'll be frank, I always liked the notion behind Fiverr.com.
Only a couple clicks and a customer can place an order using a freelancer based on a particular set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a cost. A significant one.
This is only the few freelance platforms where buyers are given free reign to abuse, threaten and outright blackmail vendors any way that they like.
In this informative article, I want to share a recent bad experience for a seller on Fiverr, and also why I chose to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Regular Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I have been using Fiverr myself (off and on ) for a while, this particular experience relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I've been guiding her building up a reputable accounts, and how to go above and beyond with every last purchase. Everything mentioned is her doing, I'm just an observer.)
In this case, she had just gotten another $5 order on her logo gig, which appeared to be like another... or so we thought.
The purchase was fulfilled in great time, and my buddy had included a bonus emblem concept in addition to the source file (which is usually a part of the more expensive bundle ).
The client"loved" among those concepts and so we proceeded to deliver her the appropriates file sizes, as mentioned in the gig description.
The customer came back asking for a social networking kit to choose the emblem, something that is obviously not offered as a member of her gig.
Against my advice, my girlfriend decided to deliver the additional job, although not getting paid any extra for this.
Following that, the client responded with more requirements and some modifications to the social networking files.
At this time, she concurred enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this individual, they were clearly overstepping their bounds here.
That is when the customer went from only overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend's Fiverr standing hostage.)
While she took a while to contemplate a response and reach out to Fiverr support for help, the client did eventually go ahead and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this is to show her he/she wasn't fiverr review - Virtual Assistant Reviews kidding.
Shortly after, while waiting on Fiverr's answer to the support question, the customer paid an extra $10 for the social media kit.
Of course, the payment has been accompanied by still another danger.
Now, all I wished to do was go all Liam Neeson and search this person down so I could repeatedly punch them from the face.
But, in the time, I had hope that Fiverr support will step in and save my girlfriend from that PITA client.
When the answer came from Fiverr support, they told her they could Five Stars for Five Dollars: Buying Reviews, Reviewed HuffPost not induce the buyer to take the purchase.
Okay, that is fair enough. (though the buyer already accepted it, technically.)
They also suggested drawing up a listing for the purchaser to show the job has been completed in accordance to the gig prerequisites.
My girlfriend hauled in her first email that the client was trying to extort her to get free work out the agreed periods, by making a negative review if she did not comply.
Naturally, it was not about the job, it had been all about seeking protection from an abusive client who was intentionally pushing their luck.
Their answer didn't provide either of us some assurance that Fiverr actually understood that, and even at this stage we felt like they did not want to get involved.
At precisely the same time, she also responded to the buyers latest danger, explaining that she would not continue to operate with them unless the feedback has been changed/removed.
(Again, this can be feedback which has been clearly and blatantly made to intimidate her to supplying function outside the agreed conditions )
A fair request by anyones standards, right?
As opposed to acknowledge what the purchaser had done up until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables in my girlfriend.
Turns out, she was the one breaking all the rules.
Because she had requested the client to change their feedback, she was no longer entitled to any help from Fiverr assistance.
It's possible to imagine how we felt reading this.
What the buyer had done and said prior to her very last message was now being swept under the carpet -- like never happened in any way.
Fiverr essentially chose to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain on an account she had worked so tough to accumulate.
If everything that occurred wasn't troubling enough, it's knowing that this person is still running rampant on Fiverr, preying on defensless vendors without a shred of repercussion.
And think, there are loads of buyers doing exactly this on Fiverr, knowing they could and will eliminate it.
But as most of this was occurring, I did a little investigating to determine whether some other sellers went through a similar ordeal with an individual buyer.
Quite quickly, I discovered a number of nearly equal cases on the Fiverr forum outdated years ago. (that's right, decades.)
This is obviously something that's been happening for a long time and it stems from providing buyers also much power over vendors.
When there's one thing I have learned about Fiverr, it's that clients are ALWAYS more appreciated than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how much time that you put into a project, or just how hard you worked on it, or perhaps how well you handled communication in a dispute, when it actually comes down to it... freelancers have little to no security.
Even if it's a very clear cut case in your favour, there is still every chance the customer will come out on top. It takes it one tiny thing that you"did no way" in accordance with their own conditions of service and EVERYTHING else is disregarded
Looking at the evidence, it is clear to me Fiverr is well aware of what is going on, yet is still inclined to sit back and let it happen.
A Final Message To Fiverr. If you are a decision maker at Fiverr and you're reading this, I urge you to seriously reevaluate your present support processes for freelancers.
It's not right that someone her comment is here can set all that time and effort into establishing an account and over-delivering at every conceivable chance, only to be shot down by the very people that you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I really don't want to leave Fiverr. I don't need to be telling people to avoid your system.
But after everything that's occurred, you haven't left me any selection.
Until something is done to guard freelancers from this type of abuse, I'll continue to propagate this post and do anything I can to prevent others from falling prey to a one-sided support staff.
The second you actually do something about it and also give freelancers a way to fight , I will be happy to update this post.
